The Fishing

High Season – November to Mid April

Legendary angler John Goodall was the first, in 1935, to stock of brown trout in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego province. After some time, the trout eventually found their way to the sea, attracted to the rich nourishment of the estuary. These sea run brown trout now endure the yearly migratory cycle of salmonids, spawning during the summer months in freshwater. Sea run brown trout (salmo trutta trutta) remain in the river for a period of time which ranges between 1 and 4 years until their first migration to the sea, where they will feed and grow for about 6 months before their first return to freshwater to spawn. These trout typically average 6 lbs, but older fish that have made it through multiple migration cycles often tip the scales at over 20 lbs! Researchers have found trout in this part of Argentina that have spawned more than 6 times. Generally, the Rio Grande's sea trout seem to lie near cut banks during the middle of the day. Though in low water, they will also lie in the faster necks of large natural pools. Naturally, sea run brown trout are on the move primarily during early morning, evening and nighttime hours. Generally, "tails in the morning and heads at night" is a good rule. Also look for trout distributed throughout pools on calm, overcast days. On sunny days, one theory holds that sea trout take best in darker, deeper waters. But the finicky nature of sea run brown trout always keeps anglers guessing and reengaging their fishing strategies.
